Lolita the Blue and Gold Macaw

Lolita’s Personality
Macaws are great companion birds. They are smart and affectionate. These birds do best with well-rounded families. They can be bored quickly and find ways to entertain themselves even if their owners aren't engaging with them enough often. Macaws who aren't properly socialized can become aggressive and may even bite. It is crucial to establish clear boundaries to ensure that the macaw does feel threatened.
Blue and Gold Macaws, in general are active birds who are a joy to play with, interact with, and climb. They require at least 2 to 3 hours per day outside their cages for physical exercise and mental stimulation. They love playing games, learning tricks, and listening to music. They also love going to the playgrounds and parks as well as hiking and going to local bars and restaurants. In addition to being a fun pet, they also make wonderful pets for children.
Despite their adorable nature, these birds are very loud and can be a nuisance to those who live near. They can make ear-shattering calls and screech-calls, which can be a nuisance in condominiums and apartments, or near children who might be startled by their roar.
The species is also monomorphic. Males and females are difficult to differentiate. Due to this, the only way to reliably determine sex is through DNA testing. Once sex is established pairing the birds can be tried and breeding can begin.

Lolita's care
For a long time activists have been calling for the release of Lolita from performing tricks at Miami Seaquarium and relocation to an open sea pen. After the 1993 hit movie Free Willy stirred public outrage for orca Keiko's return to the wild, marine biologists believed that Lolita might have a similar fate. Sadly, she did not get a chance to return to the sea.
The captors of Lolita, referred to as the Dolphin Company, have ignored veterinary recommendations and continued to put her in danger. They harm her health by forcing her to perform for tourists. They overexert her with high-speed circle and head-first diving, which exposes her to chlorine and cause her to lose weight. Additionally, they put her in an incredibly small tank that is just one-and-a-half times the size of her natural habitat.
In 2022, the new owner of Miami Seaquarium, who calls Lolita as a cousin of theirs, pledged to develop an arrangement with a group of Lolita supporters, known as Friends of Toki, and the Lummi Tribe, to move her to open water eventually. The plan would have included a facility located on the west coast of Washington where she could live for the duration of her life, receive medical attention and be monitored by researchers. The sanctuary pen was to be hundreds of times bigger than her Miami house and was surrounded by ocean, but not concrete tanks.
If the plan had gone through, Lolita (also known as Tokitae or Toki) might still be alive today. In the wild, killers whales are social animals that connect with their family members until they die. Lolita, who has lived alone at Seaquarium in isolation for 40 years, is being released into the wild. Many activists across the country have called for Lolita's departure from Seaquarium and then release into the wild. The activists include Ric O'Barry, a former Flipper trainer, Empty The Tanks, and Orca Network.

Lolita's Diet
As with any animal species captive, a blue and gold macaw's health is dependent on a healthy diet. These beautiful birds require high-quality food items, and plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables, as well as whole grains. A well-fed macaw in captivity could live up to 60 years. Lolita's Health

After years of pressure from PETA and others, the Miami Seaquarium has finally released Lolita to a sanctuary on the ocean and she will be able to take a deep dive in the ocean and possibly even be reunited with her orca mother. The plans were not enough to save the beloved whale who passed away on Friday due to what was thought to be a kidney problem.
